We want a roadmap, God offers to lead and bless

Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. (Genesis 12:1-2 ESV)

God called Abram to leave his land, his kindred and his house. At that time he was not a mobile Bedouin, he was a resident in Ur and then in Haran. Archeologists have discovered that these were advanced societies with sophisticated culture and economies. Abram would leave all his security, as well as the identity and protection that family provided.

God told him to go but promised him a great blessing. If Abram stayed in Haran he would have missed out on the blessing. God calls and we clearly have the responsibility to respond.

What a lesson for us: If we refuse to give up our comfort and those things we cherish, and we refuse to move without knowing the future we will never experience God’s blessing in the present.
