Fear or worship

Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him. (Genesis 12:7 ESV)

Abram was in a foreign land with a strange religion. At just the right time the Lord appeared to him delivering encouragement and reinforcing the promise of a new land. Abram responded by building an altar and worshiping God.

When we are confronted with obstacles in life we have the choice of fear or worship. If we look at the obstacle and our capacity to overcome it, fear comes naturally. If we seek God and his message the result is worship.

When faced with a trial, fear is an indication that I am focused on the problem not on God. The cure is to spend time reading and meditating on his word, along with prayer; both are necessary. One without the other will not produce peace and confidence.

Abram listened to God, worshiped God, then continued on his journey with confidence; a wise pattern for all of us.
