Prosperity and others

Many, LORD, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?” Let the light of your face shine on us. Fill my heart with joy when their grain and new wine abound. (Psalms 4:6-7 TNIV)

Prosperity is the badge of success in our culture. Seminar speakers and authors promise keys to prosperity, politicians promise prosperity, answer the question “who will bring us prosperity” and one thing is certain, you will find prosperity.

In contrast the Psalmist writes, “Let the light of your face shine on us.” True prosperity is found in our relationship with God, his blessings will fill our heart with joy while others are reaping their material harvest. In a world mad with possessions and power, feelings of emptiness and dissatisfaction abound. Our deep needs are not filled with titles and bank accounts; they are filled with the joy God gives.

There is another message here, how do we react when others prosper? Is there joy in my heart when another seminar speaker has more success? When another author sells more books? When someone else’s ministry is bigger?

“God fill my heart with joy when they succeed, make me grateful for their success. Make me realize that if I have even a shred of envy when others prosper it is evidence that I do not fully appreciate my relationship with you. Help me to feel the light of your face upon me today”
