Thanksgiving wish for peace

It is fitting that Thanksgiving falls at the end of November. For those of us in the Northern hemisphere this is a month of storms, yet Thanksgiving falls in these darkest of days. Better now than in May when all the flowers bloom and the world seems a bright place, for in the darkness of November  we surly need a reminder of all that is blessed.

Gratitude will come easy for some today, this has been a year of blessing and wonder. Today is a day to guard against taking it all for granted, to thank the One “from whence it comes.” To remember the years that were not so good and be humbled by the vapory nature of success.

Some face Thanksgiving Day with a heavy heart, this has been a year of struggle and frustration. A loved one will not be at the table, the feast will be Spartan due to financial hardships, relationships are strained, or health deals its double blow of pain and fear. Giving thanks takes concerted effort, if given at all.

Yet this I know and for this I am thankful. The present is but a fleeting moment in the scheme of eternity. Whether blessed in this world or toiling in this world means little. God is Lord, Jehovah and in him alone there is peace.

Our blessings come from him, many of or our struggles are of our own doing. Yet I have more than I merit, more than 99% of the people in the world. God truly gives daily bread, despite my frustration that it is not more.

But I am grateful most that “He has transferred me from the dominion of darkness and placed me in the kingdom of his dear Son.” And I cling to the words of Jesus to his disciples as he was leaving them for the cross:

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." (John 16:33 ESV)

So that is my prayer for you this Thanksgiving Day – Grateful Peace. My prayer is not first for prosperity and health but for peace. Peace with God, Peace with yourself, and Peace with those around you. My you have a blessed day,
