Is it selfish to be a Christian?

Fair question, do I/we follow Christ for what we get; For the blessings and promises? Simple answer, no. That would be the opposite of following Christ and something he himself condemned.

God says that it is our self-centeredness instead of God-centeredness that separates us from him in the first place. Our selfish desires are what get us into most of the troubles we experience in life.

Following Christ is not about intellectual acceptance of some set of teachings in exchange for some rewards, that would be selfish. What it is about is giving up my way and committing to pursue God’s way, which conflicts with my own selfishness. It is the opposite of selfishness.

Then the life we are called to follow is centered around sacrificial (unselfish) love for other people, again the opposite of selfish behavior. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” (Php 2:3-4)

What is truly selfish is to reject God and to continue doing what I want, making me the center of the universe not God. Even Jesus who went to the cross because of the glory of it, did it with the motive of “Not my will but yours.”
