Deep calls to deep

Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. (Psa 42:7 NIV)

In the midst of deep troubles we can experience proportional peace. Troubles disrupt our world, yet if we realize that our deepest desires are not related to the present but to God we find peace and hope in the midst of any situation.

“Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.” The waves of trouble came one after another, as if one trouble called to another to follow. Yet twice we read,

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.  (Psa 42:5 NIV)

Mature grace leads us to confess that even the deep waves of life are allowed by God, and are actually where we experience the grace and love of God the most. Even troubles are blessings, God is our rock.

All of this is conditioned on the opening line of this wonderful poem,

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.  (Psa 42:1 NIV)

When my deepest desire is for God the deepest wave cannot overwhelm.

  1. What a wonderful reminder that God is always in control and He has a reason for everything that happens in the world and to each of us. This is one way we reach our full potentiional in our walk with the Lord.
