Stay the course

“The way you are doing that won’t work. Here’s what you need to do…” Everyone has an idea for your success. Jesus brothers, who did not even believe in who he was and what he was doing had advice on how to increase his following. (John 7) They told him he was in the wrong place, had the wrong audience, and was not doing what he should do to attract the right audience. All this from people who did not support him and misunderstood what his purpose was for being here.

Jesus had the presence of mind to ignore them and instead operated in his timing, his plan, and his message – all of which came from his Father. The brothers could not understand Jesus’ plan and actions because the were on the outside looking in.

The message of Christ will always be criticized by those who do not believe, “The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness.” Faith does not require that we turn off our intellect, yet there are components of the message that will never make complete sense to those that do not have the Spirit.

We must avoid the temptation to adapt the message of Christ to the expectations of what the world says should be true. Or to change our methods to make the world comfortable. Or compromise the message to make it less offensive. If the message is true, then it is true regardless of what critics think. If we change the message to their liking then it is no longer true.

When our desire to please everyone results in compromising the message then we forget what Christ said shortly after his interaction with his brothers,

My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me. Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. (Joh 7:16-18 NIV)

  1. Terry,
I wish everyone in this world would read this message and know the reason for the many problems we are facing, individually and nationally.
