The greatest hour in history

Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. (John 12:23 NIV)

Now was the time for Jesus to fulfill his purpose in coming, to be glorified as God. Many saw him as a threat, the leaders ridiculed Jesus, they had a plot in place to kill him. Some saw him as a good teacher, a political activist; throngs followed him because of the miracles he performed, and the hope that he would free them from the government of Rome.

In the next few days Jesus would be glorified as God, not as a leader or teacher.  (John 12.23,31)His death will:

  1. Bring judgment to the world – because instead of worshiping the one sent by God they will kill him. “None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.”  (1 Corinthians 2:8 NIV)
  2. The prince of this world will be driven out. With the cross Satan and his armies begin to experience defeat, which will be complete at the return of Christ. The grip of evil on the world is broken, and now there is the anticipation of a day when it is completely restored.
  3. Jesus will draw all to himself, not just the Jews, but all have the offer of salvation and eternal life. Satan is mortally wounded, Jesus will offer liberation and forgiveness, sadly most will reject his offer.

Jesus is a pattern for living, but if that was all he was he would never have been glorified as the Son of God. This hour makes the wonderful truth of Colossians possible

For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (Colossians 1:13-14 NIV)
