Today’s quiz, what brings glory?

Today’s quiz, which one does not fit? The glory of  a presidential inauguration, the glory of the royal wedding, the glory of the Olympic medal podium, the glory of dying a brutal underserved death.

Jesus said, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” (John 12:23 NIV) His death on the cross was imminent and he knew it, he went on to say, “It was for this very reason I came to this hour.” It was for this appointment with death that he came and lived, it was his inglorious death that would bring glory to God and Christ.

The least glorious according to human estimation was the most glorious to God. No wonder people for the last 2000+ years have called Christianity foolish. We worship and put faith in one who was treated like a common criminal.

Yet the glory is that “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” For God is glorified in that he redeemed a world that deserved judgment instead. He is glorified in that he offers forgiveness, hope, and eternal life to those who do not deserve it.

All human glory will end in nothing. Great empires fall, leaders and athletes die and their glory fades to a memory. Yet the death of Christ brought glory for eternity because it destroyed the blight of sin.

For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (Colossians 1:13-14 NIV)
